The 5th EU-Georgia Association Council: main results

The Association Council reviewed the state of EU-Georgia bilateral relations.

Georgia has made great steps in the implementation of the association agreement. This provides the basis for our political association and economic integration. The EU is fully committed to exploring the full potential of our partnership, including the export and growth potential offered by the deep and comprehensive free trade area we have in place.

We had a very fruitful meeting today and were able to discuss the great progress we have made on a wide range of issues on our cooperation agenda. We discussed the implementation of the association agreement, including the DCFTA. Georgia is continuing to overhaul its legislative and institutional system to bring it in line with the EU norms and standards.

The EU and Georgia agreed on a joint press statement:

The Association Council took stock of progress in the implementation of the EU-Georgia association agreement, including the deep and comprehensive free trade agreement (DCFTA).

The Association Council discussed political developments in Georgia, such as the recent presidential elections and ongoing reform of the public administration. It also addressed cooperation on strategic communication to tackle disinformation. The Association Council took note of Georgia’s "Roadmap 2EU" which aims at enhancing Georgia's integration with the EU.

The EU and Georgia discussed issues related to the area of justice, freedom and security, such as judicial reform and respect for human rights. It also discussed how to step up cooperation in these areas.

In addition, the Association Council examined the economic situation and EU cooperation with Georgia, including in the transport and energy sectors.

The Association Council discussed foreign policy issues, including cooperation on common foreign and security policy (CFSP) as well as peaceful conflict resolution. The EU High Representative Federica Mogherini and Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze, also exchanged views on global challenges, the Eastern Partnership and the European neighbourhood policy.
